The Greenleaf Art Center is home to a creative collective working in the visual arts and related fields. At GAC we encourage artistic growth through workshops, classes, art exhibits and monthly events. The GAC teaching staff are local professional artists and teachers.

drawing. Through classic lessons and innovative exercises we will use
various mediums and techniques to explore the basics of visual representation.

Draw or paint the figure. An exploration of the figure as subject matter.
Learn how to render the figure through observation of a live model. Emphasis
will be on color, shading, and gaining an understanding of the nature of

Getting to the essence of a subject, telling it’s story, expressing a mood
or emotion through spontaneous quick line drawing. Class will use still life
or people as subjects. Materials needed to begin are an 11” x 14” sketch

Get your ideas out of your head and onto paper fast! Work on
basic drawing skills of shading, perspective, color, and figure

Create unique mixed media collages, drawings, or small sculptures with regular
and non-traditional materials—such as found objects and images, paper or
fabric scraps, plastic, wire and text. Students will find inspiration from their
own experiences, the diversity of materials, and examples shown in class. Composition,
color and technique will be addressed.

Using a broad range of wet and dry media, students will experiment with surprising combinations that create a visual tension and energy that a single medium cannot. Media choices may include: watercolor, gouache, ink, graphite, charcoal, crayon, water-soluble crayon, colored pencils, collage and resists. All levels.

You will learn the basic tools and techniques of this surprisingly versatile graphic medium by first creating a black and white print. Then, you will move on to creating a multiple color print using two or three registered blocks. Block cutting and printing tools are supplied. All levels welcome.

Beginning and Intermediate level class for all ages.
Beginning knitters will learn to cast on, knit, purl,
increase, decrease, and bind off. Intermediate knitters will work at their own
pace on patterns of their choice with the guidance of the instructor.

A classic baby cardigan knit in one piece with 2 seams. Elizabeth Zimmermann designed this item to fit baby for several months. Finished size is about 12mo. This class is for beyond-beginning knitters who are comfortable knitting and purling. Sarah will guide you through increasing, decreasing, picking up stitches, and seaming if you aren’t completely comfortable with those tasks. You will see the magic transformation of your knitting turn into felt! The pattern for women’s slippers makes a great gift. If you are a fast knitter you will finish a pair in no time. You can make another pair OR you can work on a felted bag. We will felt using a washing machine at a location TBD. This class is for beyond-beginning knitters who are comfortable knitting and purling. Sarah will guide you through increasing, decreasing, picking up stitches, and seaming.

We will cover the elements of basic photography: Aperture, Shutter Speed,
White Balance/ISO, Depth of Field, Focal Length, Basics of Composition and
Methods of Printing Digital Images (digital inkjet, lambda). Students must
have their own Digital SLR cameras (manual focusing -not a point-and-shoot pocket
sized camera) and laptop computer.

Hey kids lookout! It’s the Manga & American Comics Art Studio. Explore the popular Japanese Manga and American style comics’ characters. Learn to draw the heroic figure and anime’ style characters in action. Over the course of six weeks you’ll develop drawing skills that will amaze even you. A portion of each 90 min. session will be devoted to sharing news and current events in the fantastic world of comics’ art. Draw a scene from Little Red Riding Hood taking the Big Bad Wolf’s point of view. Imagine Goldie Lox in the house of Three Dinosaurs. Learn to draw unique pictures that are so full of energy that they appear to leap from the page. Create rough sketches and develop finished color drawings using the working methods practiced by top storyboard artists and cartoonists. Bring a 9” x12” sketchbook, two #2 pencils, a kneadable eraser and your imagination to the first class.

Explore collage, mapmaking, drawing and sculpture using ordinary and unique materials—such
as pictures, toy parts, bottle caps, cardboard and fabric. Students will create

Explore different techniques of painting and drawing. Students will build
a familiarity with materials and techniques. This class is an introduction
to line, value, color and composition focusing on fundamentals with an emphasis
on developing observational skills.
Students are responsible for their own
supplies for this class, a materials list will be furnished at registration.
Adult Classes are open to Ages 15 and over. Dress for mess.
To register for classes or workshops, print and fill out the class registration
form and return it to the Center. You can also call the Greenleaf
Art Center Office (773) 465-4652. Registration is accepted on a first come,
first served basis Payment is due at registration. You must pre-register to
ensure space in a class or workshop. Checks should be made to The Greenleaf
Art Center. Refunds will be given less a processing fee of $10. You must withdraw
from a class prior to its start date.
The Greenleaf Art Center reserves the right to cancel a class or workshop
if a minimum of enrollment is not met. Missed classes may only be made up
within the same class session. List of supplies needed for each class will
be available at registration.
